Fans of experimentality, at least those in the Baltics, know that October is that time of the year to harvest the ripe fruits of adventurous music at Skaņu Mežs festival in Riga. Last weekend saw the 12th edition of the event that balances on the borders of the electronic and the acoustic, the improvised and the tightly woven, the obvious and the abstract. This time, local venues were filled with the sounds of such musical heavyweights as Andy Stott, Xeno & Oaklander, Marissa Nadler, Robert Henke of Monolake, Blixa Bargeld and many others.
